Hi, I’m Martin Morales, I’m a chef and restaurateur. We run the stunning Casita Andina and Ceviche Soho, Andina and Ceviche Old St restaurants. These are pioneering Peruvian restaurants in London. http://cevicheuk.com/ http://andinalondon.com/
Ceviche Old St Gallery is the capital’s first contemporary Peruvian art gallery. Housed within the new Ceviche Old St restaurant, Martin is working alongside respected curator Claudia Trosso. They have selected more than 65 works from Peru’s top contemporary artists for BIRTH: Ceviche Old St Gallery’s launch exhibition.
The aim of the new East London gallery is to present a new generation of Peruvian artists, many of which have never shown their works in London before, but some of which have presented works at The Saatchi Gallery, TATE Modern, Art Basel and ARCO among others. BIRTH is an evolving show which will be updated when works are sold. Twice a year Morales and Trosso hope to be partnering with Peru’s leading gallery Galeria Lucia De La Puente and MATE (Mario Testino’s Gallery in Peru) to present solo shows and new group shows. Ceviche Old St Gallery is also part of the famous Whitechapel Gallery's First Thursdays. On the first Thursday of every month more than 150 galleries in East London open their doors for free events, workshops, talks and private views during a special late opening.
Displayed on the historic tiled walls of Ceviche Old St Gallery, art connoisseurs and aficionados as well as diners to Ceviche Old St alike can enjoy a unique collection of paintings, photography, street art, sculpture and graphic art. Morales and Trosso will introduce a new exhibition every 6-months, with select artists invited to display their own solo exhibition throughout the year.
Highlights of the launch exhibition include Art Basel favourite Cesar Cornejo and his dramatic sculpture of the skyline of the city of Puno influenced by reconstructed corrugated steel and Miguel Aguirre’s beautiful oil paintings focused on the theme of ‘mimicry’, portraying how animals can blend seamlessly in with their environments. These are complemented by a stunning collection of works from Alice Wagner, who uses wax and thread to recreate iconic Peruvian music album covers creating pieces rich with texture and vitality. Fernando Bryce, one of Peru’s most influential visual artists, exhibits a work influenced by collected prints and posters and alongside this is a photo by one of the world’s leading editorial photographers, Mariano Vivanco, whose photos form part of a permanent display at the National Gallery.
Housed in the historic Alexandra Trust Dining Rooms, Ceviche Old St Gallery is located just a two minute walk from Old Street tube station and also comprises an impressive 70-cover dining room as well as a 60-cover Peruvian bar dining area serving a creative list of Pisco cocktails and drinks. Morales worked closely on the interior design with Fabled Studio to preserve the legacy and incredible original features that still existed in the building, retaining the Victorian architecture as well as introducing same-era Peruvian aesthetics into the design. The terrazzo floors stay true to the dining room’s heritage and the walls still display the original tiling and glazed open brickwork, providing the perfect backdrop for Morales and Trosso to introduce Peru’s top contemporary artists to London.
For Ceviche Old St Gallery, Morales and Trosso have also worked with a developer to create the Ceviche App which features sensors behind each work so when you are close by, all information about each work appears visually and audibly helping you to access all information immediately. Future updates of the Ceviche App will have functionality for the visually impaired making this a useful tool for the local community and its partnering with Moorfields Eye Hospital.
