A reporter's story of living with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM)--Philadelphia Phillies Morning Call writer Mandy Housenick was diagnosed with HCM at age 15, bringing to a halt her participation in four competitive sports in high school. HCM is a genetic disease in which the heart's muscle is abnormally thick. It affects one in 500 people, a small number of whom are at risk for sudden death, especially younger people who engage in competitive sports.
