Great story! Off beat sort of recollections like this give insight into a figure like Django that a recitation of dates and accomplishments can not. Thanks.

WOW; great story ConAstone1. My Dad , and Uncle ran The Johny Smith Music Center in Wheatridge Colorado in the early 70's ; I saw him give a seminar in the Music Store. You must have see him in his prime in the 50's at Birdland; WOW !! Tell me does anybody have any live recordings of John Smith from the 50's ???

This man's music has soothed my soul for many years, but this is the first time I'd heard him speak... Now I know his voice, smile and general demeanour are also soothing... A true gentleman to his fingertips... Especially to his fingertips, come to think of it....

How f*ckin' nice!... I love this story! - what an insight, indeed.

I grew up in Johnny's store in Colorado Springs and he was the first person to treat me like a professional when I was in high school. An incredibly warm, sweet guy. Getting to play an entire show of big band arrangements done for him was one of the highlights of my early life as a saxophonist. If only I'd had the presence of mind to buy a Johnny Smith Gibson at the shop for $1000 bucks in those days...
