My 2004 WRX (82000 miles) started making this ugly sound around 3500 rpms. At first I thought it was my aftermarket exhaust, since the gasket between the midpipe and the rest of the exhaust. After opening the hood, it sounds more like it comes from the engine itself.
I ended up pulling the engine and taking off the oilpan. The oil filter was filled with little metal chunks and you could hear an audible clunk when you rotate the crankshaft by hand. I managed to remove the bolts on the bottom of the nr.4 piston to the rod bearing, and it turned out that the bearing was shredded badly.
I haven't fixed this yet, but it appears that I have a couple of options - Either remachine my current block, buy a new EJ205 ($17xx) or buy an EJ255 and do a hybrid build ($18xx). These prices are as of September 2010 from the Subaru dealers.
