The Dubbing Artist was inspired by an article Tom read in The Guardian about Irina Nistor, a woman in Communist Romania who risked her life to translate and overdub illegally imported American and British films (which were banned) into Romanian. She became a huge celebrity because her voice dubbed every single role of every single film that people ever watched. And although it was said that her voice became the most famous voice in Romania behind only Ceausescu, people never knew what she actually looked like as her celebrity was underground, illicit and couldn't be mentioned. So it is a song about obsession. The protagonist is utterly consumed by her; he sees all her work but he never sees her face other than in his haunted imagination.
