Telecom Innovation or Disruption? How DC Startups Impact the Industry

Two months ago, Jeff Bonforte, CEO of San Francisco-based Xobni, rocked the house at the TelecomHUB with his Left-Coast perspective on the telecom industry and early stage companies. Silicon Valley is still seen as the startup capital, but the DC area continues to reinvent itself as more than just the seat of politics and home of lobbyists. A website for local startups, Proudly Made in DC, states, "We're a thriving community of entrepreneurs, engineers, developers, designers, and technologists working hard to make the next big thing".

@ Michael Goldstein, Founder, Endeavor DC - Michael Goldstein is a serial entrepreneur with 15 years experience focused on e-commerce, online content and subscription businesses. Michael has founded five businesses and sold three, including DealPal to XL Marketing in 2010 and Magazine-of-the-Month to Magazines.com in 2004.

@ Stephanie Hay, Co-Founder, FastCustomer - Steph leads product and UX design for FastCustomer, whose single-tap mobile apps eliminate "waiting on hold" for consumers who want to reach a human at more than 3,000 companies -- including AT&T, Comcast, and Verizon. She's also a resident mentor at 500 Startups, founder of NovaCowork, and co-organizer of the DC Lean Startup Circle.

@ David J. Steinberg, CEO, SnappCloud - David has over 30 years of high technology leadership experience in DC and Silicon Valley. He recently sold the company he led as CEO, SwapDrive, to Symantec for $124M - an eleven times return on investment. David serves as an advisor to Core Capital Partners, a Washington, DC based venture capital firm. SnappCloud is a technology company that designs, builds, and operates branded app stores for leading device makers and distributors.

@ D. P. Venkatesh, CEO, mPortal - D.P. has more than eighteen years experience in the telecommunications industry across Wireless, Internet, and Media sectors. His roles have varied from executive management to strategic planning and business development. As CEO of mPortal, D.P. oversees all aspects of strategy, sales, and marketing for mPortal. Over the past eleven years, he has led the company through its various growth stages.

@ Pete Erickson (moderator), Founder, Disruptathon and MoDev - Pete has been instrumental in defining the DC region as a leader in innovation and mobile development. Pete is a regular guest on NPR, local news casts and recently briefed the White House on issues related to the growth of the mobile development industry.
