Thunderbird has been in operation since 1936 and celebrates 70 years of excellence in camping programs. Originally, the camp was founded to provide opportunities for less privileged youth and was owned by the Charlotte Observer. Today the YMCA Of Greater Charlotte operates Camp Thunderbird and remains committed to serving children from all socioeconomic backgrounds. Forty families in need receive camp scholarships each session. Funds are raised annually to support this endeavor; an opportunity for giving is noted on the camper application.
Year round Thunderbird offers programs for people with a variety of interests and needs. During the school year, environmental education classes are held for North and South Carolina school groups. Classes include bird study, fish dissection, orienteering and forest ecology. After school Camp is provided each afternoon for young people in the local community. On weekends, conference and retreat groups such as churches, youth organizations and family camp groups utilize the facility for a variety of events. During the summer, day camp programs are held at Thunderbird.
