On April 5, 2013, The Stanford Law, Science and Technology Program hosted the conference "Design Patents in the Modern World." Drawing on the experience of lawyers, in-house counsel and academics, the conference explored both practical and policy ramifications of recent changes in the law and from recent high-profile cases like Apple v. Samsung. In this panel "Overlaps with Copyright and Trademark" panelist discussed the doctrine of election; what happens to product configuration and copyright when design patents expire; optimal business strategy for protecting designs using different legal tools.
