This is Missy Mae, I adopted her from Petsmart. She began showing signs of disability at 8 weeks of age. The manager of the store brought her to the vet to have her checked out. Upon discovering that she was a mystery rat, the manager decided to have her put to sleep. Thanks to an employee with a big heart she was placed up for adoption instead. She warned me not to place her with any other rats because she might be bullied to death.
Calypso and Pheobe were only about a month old when I brought her home Mae was 8 months old so I decided to introduce them. Pheobe succumbed to an existing illness a couple days later. Mae was there for Calypso through the loss of her sister. Since that day Calypso has taken on the role of leader in the cage. She is always caring for Mae and showing her how to explore her surroundings.
Soon after I brought her home Mae was diagnosed with a neurological disorder. This could have been from injury early on in life. Mae went from a nervous rat who would circle the bottom level of the cage and head plant under the liner, to a lively girl who will not let her disability hold her back, She is a very special girl.
Her birthday is on March 23rd she will be a year old. I am hoping for many more birthdays down the road, and many more lovely days with her.
