Saul Perlmutter tells why he loves working at UC Berkeley, one of the only places where research like that which led to his Nobel Prize, can be carried out. Perlmutter, who led one of two teams that simultaneously discovered the accelerating expansion of the universe, has been awarded the 2011 Nobel Prize in Physics, to be shared with two other scientists, including former UC Berkeley postdoc Adam Riess. The discovery in 1998 led to the realization that the universe is largely composed of an enigmatic "dark energy."
