TOLEDO, OH (WTOL) - A new partnership is forming between the University of Toledo Medical Center and American University of Beirut.

The School of Medicine at AUB in Lebanon dates back to 1867, with its medical center established in 1902.

University representatives visited Toledo, aimed at creating partnerships for student and faculty exchange programs, as well as forming collaboration efforts for research.

"We would like to share, open up to exchange of students and faculty in various disciplines, as well as going forward with joint ventures in research activities." says Dr. Fadi Bitar, Associate Dean of External Medical Affairs at American University of Beirut Medical Center.

One area of possible research is Diabetes due to the high rate of that disease in Lebanon.

"We'd love to interview and meet residents from there and have them incorporated into our residency program, internal medicine and hopefully after that in fellowships." says Dr. Ragheb Assaly, UTMC Internal Medicine Residency Director.

While no formal agreements have been reached, WTOL 11 is being told a medical student from AUB will soon be in Toledo to begin a rotation at UTMC.
