My first visit to the KWVR in over 3 years was to their Winter Steam Gala. With no theme this was just a train forward festival of steam, with an intensive timetable featuring a variety of motive power. The gala featured three visiting locos in the form of LNER B1 No 61264, LMS Crab No 13065, and LMS Black 5 No 45212. The visit of 45212 and fellow Black 5 No 45407 had been in the balance during the previous week, with the cancellation of 'The Tin Bath' tour on the Sunday of the gala, their visit ultimately depended on successful test runs. When it came down to it, 45407 never left Bury for the tests, and 45212, follow some minor troubles, made a successful mainline test run, and was able to attend the event for Saturday and Sunday. The weather for the weekend was a mixed bag, with Friday and Sunday featuring a fair amount of rain, while Saturday was blessed with sun for most of the day. The full loco line up was:-
