Polyrhythms
2vs3 and 3vs2
Illustrated with hands drumming and animated graphic as parts of a three stage rhythm rocket:
- The mental understanding of how the 2-pulse and the 3-pulse merge within a 6 beat cycle. This becomes clear from the animation.
- The use of word strings to facilitate the memory and execution with hand.
- The integration in body. Clapping is only the first step: the exercises may be taken further using other postures - lying and walking,...
The video plays in three tempi for different levels of practice challenge: Slow, medium and fast, each of 90 seconds duration.
The right hand (blue colour) continuously drums a 2-divided even pulse, which you may count
1-and-a-2-and-a-1-and-a-2-and-a-...
All in all 6 beats pr cycle but only the numbered are with claps. They are accentuated naturally by the string of words:
PO-ly-RHY-thm-PO-ly-RHY-thm-... (or alternatives like 'IT'S a FEE- ling' or 'NOT a PRO-blem' etc.).
MAJUSCLES indicate stressed syllables, minuscles indicate syllables where the stress is on the counter-pulse )
The left hand (green colour) continuously drums a 3-divided even pulse, which you may count
1-and-2-and-3-and-1-and-2-and-3-and-...
Again a 6 beats pr cycle with claps on the numbered elements. They are accentuated naturally by the string of words:
NOT DIF-fi-CULT NOT DIF-fi-CULT... (and alternatives which you may find!)
Feel free to challenge yourself changing hands, following either the 2- or the 3- pulse with your feet,....
