The Global Outbreak Alert and Response Network (GOARN) links existing institutions and networks that have human and technical resources that can be mobilized in the event of outbreaks of potential international significance. GOARN provides an operational framework for pooling the expertise and skills available from these institutions to help ensure that the international community is constantly alert and able to respond effectively to such outbreaks.
Dr. Pradip K. Bardahn, of the International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research in Bangladesh--a WHO Collaborating Center--was mobilized through GOARN to train doctors, nurses, pharmacists and health workers in Haiti in clinical management of cholera patients. Two weeks into his stay in Haiti, after visiting more than a dozen hospitals and training several hundred healthcare profesionals, Dr. Bardaham shared his experiences and impressions of the cholera epidemic and the response.
