Fils d'une famille polonaise installée en Australie, David Helfgott se révèle très jeune être un pianiste surdoué. Il reçoit régulièrement des propositions pour partir étudier aux États-Unis. Mais chaque fois, il se heurte à son père, un homme autoritaire et protecteur, qui refuse qu'il quitte la famille. David décide toutefois de passer outre et se rend à Londres. Travaillant sans relâche, il espère ainsi reconquérir l'estime paternelle. Alors qu'il joue pour la première fois au Royal Albert Hall, le jeune pianiste s'effondre...
