The submerged continental landmass of New Zealand' is twenty times as large as its area above sea level. The 200 nautical mile wide Exclusive Economic Zone is the fifth largest in the world. Where the continental shelf extends beyond the EEZ it gives New Zealand further economic rights to resources on and below the sea floor.
