Acting on Personal Experiences to Drive Impact

Hospitals can uncover unique ways to improve the patient experience by tapping into the perspective of current and former patients.

In addition to creating a Patient and Family Advisory Council (PFAC) so members can weigh in on ongoing hospital decisions, nurse leaders can ask these advisors to take on and own personally meaningful projects.

Dorothea Handron and Melissa Thomason, patient advisors at Vidant Health, describe how their projects of replacing call buttons and developing ways for intubated patients to communicate with their caregivers were inspired by their own hospital experiences.
