My Toy Poodle was coughing and was diagnosed with heart disease over a year ago ... maybe 2 years now. He was taking Fortekor for his heart and Furosemide for the cough for the last year or more... he is 13 years old in this video. All of a sudden one day he couldn't stop coughing and it seemed sudden that he coughed so much. Tried upping his Furosemide but that didn't help. Took him to the vet and the vet took him off the Furosemide for the cough and put him on Clavaceptin 50 mg for 10 days and Torbutrol 1 mg for a few weeks. Now he doesn't cough and he is feeling much better. He only takes the Fortekor heart pill now and no other pills, not even the Furosemide. I changed his diet because he had bad breath which could have had something to do with his kidney disease. Vet receptionist said to change his diet if he has kidney disease... which the vet did blood work a while before this saying he had kidney disease after he was diagnosed with heart disease. He had stopped eating and wasn't feeling good so took him to the vet and the vet said he had kidney disease and to just give him anything he will eat and he started eating again after that. His breath smells much better now maybe that he isn't on Furosemide anymore or maybe because of the change to his diet, I am not sure, but the Furosemide is hard on a dogs kidneys I was told. So I am feeding him less protein and more carbs like home cooked yams, regular potatoes, canned nibblet corn, canned petite peas, frozen cooked shrimp defrosted to get his pill in him cause he doesn't like pill pockets anymore and he has never turned shrimp down... but he is getting picky about what he wants to eat. He won't eat canned dog food anymore or hotdogs. He likes beef or chicken rollover you buy in the store, cut up into tiny pieces. He loved fresh coconut cut into tiny pieces the first time I gave it to him but he won't eat that now? I thought the coconut cleaned the bad smell of his breath but it could have just been a coincidence cause sometimes his breath smelled ok and sometimes it didn't??? I also give him roast chicken and he loves Friskes canned cat food now LOL. Friskies cheddar and beef or something I think it was in gravy. No he doesn't have a collapsed treachea and whatever it was that caused his cough is gone now after taking the pills for a few weeks. The pills are Torbutrol 1 mg for 7 days and continue if it helps, and Clavaceptin 50mg twice daily for 10 days. He doesn't have to take these pills anymore that he isn't coughing. He started the pills on March 26, 2012 and its May 9, 2012 .. it takes a bit for the pills to work contrary to what the vet initially told me to wait until after the weekend (it was Friday) and by Monday I would know if the pills would work. It took a bit longer than that (about a week) after starting the pills, before he stopped coughing so much. And I was told that the Fortekor is for kidneys and not just heart disease too. Glad he is back to his old self again :)
