On Friday August 31, 2012, Congressman Courtney presented WWII Veteran, Edward Beebe of Groton with medals he had earned decades earlier. Mr. Beebe enlisted in the U.S. Navy at the age of 17 in September, 1944. He served aboard the Navy destroyer USS Ralph Talbot, which, as part of the Pacific Fleet, participated in assaults on the northern Luzon in the Philippines, on Iwo Jima and on the Ryukyus Islands. In April, 1945, the destroyer was attacked by two Japanese Kamikaze aircraft - an attack that killed five crew members and wounded nine others.

Mr. Beebe also served in the Navy Reserves as a Fireman First Class, and worked at Groton-based Electric Boat from 1950 until his retirement in 1980.
