Game #10: vs. Olathe Northwest April 22, 2011 WASHBURN RURAL 1 OLATHE NORTHWEST 0 The Lady Blues won a hard-fought defensive battle 1-0 over Olathe Northwest last night at McElroy Field. The entire game consisted of very few offensive chances, lots of midfield play and physical action. Rural would score the only goal of the night with 14 minutes remaining in the first half. The play started when Kadie Baumgardner gained possession of the ball off a Northwest throw-in and played a nice centering pass to Halie Howard. Howard quickly beat two defenders and lofted a right-footed cross into the middle of the box where Braydi Frederick leaped above the defense and headed the ball past the Northwest keeper. Armed with a 1-0 lead, the Lady Blues would play outstanding defense the rest of the game and would give the Lady Ravens just a couple of chances to score. The first came late in the opening 40 minutes off a free kick that nearly found the back of the net, but Alex Hall was there to clear it off the line. The other came late in the game on a corner kick, but goalkeeper Sarah Fritz was able to punch the ball out of danger. Rural did have some chances of its own to increase the lead including a header from Lexi Godlove and nice shots in the second half from Howard and Baumgardner, but none of them found the back of the net. Rural's defense of Fritz, Hall, Howard, Meg Werner, Mackenzie Lamott, Jenna Burnette and Kaylyn Estes were the key to the big victory over Northwest. Rural, now 6-4 on the season, will have almost a week off before they travel to Hayden on Thursday, April 28 th !
