After having already made massive waves with their debut album 'Birth of a New Day' both in and out of the Vaporwave community, ２８１４, the collaborative project between genre legends HKE and t e l e p a t h テレパシー能力者, have returned with a gorgeous new LP titled 'Rain Temple'. The whole thing practically bursts at the seams with genuine emotion and does an impeccable job at maintaining a rich and detailed atmosphere from start to finish. Instrumentally, the thing on 'Rain Temple' that seems to be most improved upon from previous ２８１４ material is the percussion, which cuts clearly and satisfyingly through the haze of lush, glistening synths and hits hard in a way that really compliments the overall sound in a noticeably better way.
Naturally, the visual and sonic theme of dystopian cyberpunk remains, but a new perspective on it is given just from the cover art alone. In the image, we see someone who apparently exists outside of the towering megacity in the distance, choosing to meditate upon the constant, pouring rain and surrounding herself with both urban debris and the forms of life that grow out from under it. Rain also plays a large part in the music, of course, given that the sounds of both large storms and the dripping from a storm that has just passed can be heard in several places throughout the record. Overall, an absolutely stellar effort from the duo.
