On 14th January 2008 i attempted to take my life. I was stopped by a passer-by who talked, listened and gave me hope. It changed my outlook and intentions that day. I never got a chance to thank him but now i want to find him and show my gratitude.
Because of him, i made a recovery, learnt how to manage my mental illness, schizoaffective disorder, and go on to become a mental health campaigner. I hope to give others the same hope that it is possible to overcome any struggle that this stranger gave to me.
At the same time, i want to raise awareness of suicide; currently the biggest killer of young men in the UK. 16 people every day take their lives in this country, but together i believe we have the power to reduce this statistic. But we must break the silence surrounding suicide and reduce the stigma of mental illness.
