A 53-year-old East Bridgewater man was killed today when his sedan suddenly veered into incoming traffic on Route 53 in Hanover and collided head-on with a Chevrolet minivan being operated as a school bus, Hanover police said.

Hanover Police Lieutenant Robert Heywood identified the driver of the Kia sedan as Donald Kelley of East Bridgewater. "Kelley's vehicle went into the southbound lane and hit the van head-on,'' Haywood said.

He said Kelley was driving northbound on Route 53 near the Hanover Mall when Kelley's sedan swerved into the southbound traffic and smashed into a van operated by TLC Transportation.

Two students, a teacher, and the driver were taken to South Shore Hospital for treatment of what appeared to be minor injuries, Heywood said. He said the students were high school-aged and from the Milton schools.

Heywood said Hanover police and State Police are investigating the crash and there was no quick answer as to why Kelley lost control of his vehicle.

According to Leslie Tamarkin, logistics director for Canton-based TLC, the van was carrying two students, a teacher, and a driver.

The blue van is marked with the TLC emblem on the door and had a yellow school bus sign attached to the roof.

Tamarkin said TLC operates 130 vans shuttling students to schools, home and other locations each day.
