In he seventh decade of the nuclear era, the threat of nuclear war and destruction continues to be as strong as it was following the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and the onset of the Cold War. Today, mankind is standing at a nuclear crossroad. On one hand, we are at an alarming tipping point on proliferation of nuclear weapons, with a growing risk of terrorism. On the other hand, there is a more hopeful alternative: a world in which there are fewer such weapons and proliferation, instability and nuclear terrorism are less likely. The reality for the 21st century is what we make of it.
