Always install a check valve above the pump. This will keep water from flowing back into the pit and it makes it easier to replace the pump in the future. You can have the check valve vertical or horizontal.
When you place your new pump into the pit, have the float on the opposite side of the inlet pipe. This will help keep waste and paper from catching on the float.
Drill a 3/16" hole in the waste pipe about the height of the top of the pump, below the check valve.
Tie off the electric cord so it doesn't get caught on the float.
