City went into the last game of the season, in front of 43,000 at Maine Road, in a head-to-head battle with Luton for the final relegation place. Luton were in the drop-zone before the game. City, who were eighth on January 15th, had taken only 12 points from their previous 17 games and went into the game needing a draw to survive.
