"If we don't do this nobody else will" are words in this song Sea Change by Turin Brakes. And a Sea Change is exactly what we are faced with. I thought this was an excellent song that reminded me of so much of what is facing us now. I do not own the copyrights to this song.
Compliance Energy has proposed the Raven Coal Project. The only shipping port that is being considered is in the heart of Tseshaht First Nation's Traditional Territories in Port Alberni. The project plans include the dredging of sediments that have not been dredged since the 1980's due to the known toxins that exist from a pulp mill pumping deadly chemicals into the water.
Despite this knowledge, Compliance Energy and local politicians continue to support this project even without any lab analysis work being done. Core samples were taken but the results have not been released to Tseshaht First Nation. It is absurd that this lab analysis was not done "before" any project plans were made.
When taken with the expansion of oil tankers, the tsumani debris coming to the West Coast of Vancouver Island, and all without any consultation with First Nations communities the time of a crossroads and turning point has arrived. The continued clear cutting of forests, the actions of Compliance Energy in not conducting due diligence prior to selecting only one option as a port (when there are existing coal shipping facilities that could have been used) needs to be raised in public awareness.
Our grandchildren's grandchildren depend on us to accept our responsibility.
