A horse we train named Slew City Boy was running Thurs night at Hoosier Park in IN. This is a video of his race and what could have been a complete tragedy turned out to be a miracle. The gate crew could not get the starting gate moved before the horses came back around to run down the stretch and with no warning, the riders and horses were full out running at it with no where to go. I witnessed it live and ran down the track when I realized the horses and riders were all in a tangle desperately trying to stop before impact. I can only watch this video knowing everyone, horse and rider, made it off the track, some with bumps, bruises, and cuts (ours lost a back shoe) but minor compared to the thoughts you, like me, have as you watch the catastrophe unfold. I thank God for His mercy and angels in a situation that although was horrific to witness, did not a disastrous ending.
To save speculation the reason the tractor couldn't move the gates in the first place was it wouldn't switch into gear. They got the backup tractor (the race is still running and closing in on them) but when the driver pulled away, it was not hooked up! By now, it's too late and no one has taken secondary precautions like calling the announcer or stewards, sending the outrider who is on a horse out to get their attention, or any other measure to warn the riders to pull up before the come out of the turn. The race was declared a no contest, which means it didn't count for anything. The track has proposed to divide the purse among the contestants pending approval by the IN Breeders Association who handles the funds.
