Richard Duryea thought he had the flu. It turned out his heart was failing. "I was on my way out," said Richard. "I was gray, no circulation, no oxygen, I could hardly walk. But once I had the LVAD put in everything changed."

"If I wouldn't have gotten the LVAD, I wouldn't have survived a year," recalled Richard. "But the hospital was just phenomenal. I got my heart June 26th and it was the best day of my life."

Richard's LVAD got him healthy enough for a transplant. "I'm one of the luckiest guys, because I was knocking on the door," said Richard. "I didn't go through and that LVAD was what kept me alive long enough to get that heart.
