A sudden cloudburst hit the Kharahal valley in northern Himachal Pradesh early Monday morning.

Local residents were woken by the thunder.

[Vinod, Local Resident]:
"We heard noise outside in the morning, so we all suddenly woke up and came out of our houses. We saw the drains were overflowing and our house began shaking, so we all left our houses and woke up all the neighbors."

Residents have been safely evacuated from their houses.

Around a dozen villages have been adversely affected by cloudburst. Roads in many areas have been washed away.

This cloudburst is likely to affect the region's economy... which is mainly apple growing. Most of the apples have already been harvested, but with the roads in bad shape, it won't be easy to transport the apple crop to other parts of the country for sale.

The region has received three percent more rain than it normally does this time of the year.
