I wrote this song to help the grade 3/4 class I'm working in learn about translations (slides) and reflections (flips). Feel free to use it for teaching :)

I move these shapes around a grid sometimes
A new location by translation
It doesn't flip, it doesn't turn at all
It just slides by up, down or side to side

Yeah, it slides up or down
And it slides left and right
But it stays the same
The whole entire time

And it slides North or South
And it slides East or West
This geometric move's
The one I like the best

But sometimes I want to move a different way
I want to flip it, mirror image
You know it looks exactly opposite
I have affection for this reflection

I've got to look, look, look, look
In the mirror, got me hooked, hooked, hooked, hooked
I saw reflections like in my math book, book, book
Congruent figures got me shook, shook, shook, shook

Yeah, yeah
Slide or translation
Flip or reflection* (should be reflection...I sing "rotation" in the song)

That's what I've learned about these translations
I call them slides too, you've got to know it's true
I also know flips are reflections
And I will teach you, just sing along to!
