When you hear the word "design," what first comes to mind? For most people, it may remind them of high-end fashion. However, there is more to the word "design" than that. It is used for industrial facilities in eco-friendly ways, or even used to solve social problems in the field of energy or medicine. To vitalize this, the "Design Technology Development Business Reports" have been produced by the Korea Evolution Institute of Industrial Technology. Let's take a look.
This maintenance bill is different in color, based on the amount of energy consumed. If you use more energy than the average household, your maintenance bill will be red; if average, yellow; and if less than the average, it will be green. Since the new bill can measure the level of energy consumption easily, it resulted in a ten percent energy savings when initially adopted.
[Interview - Joon-kyung Yang, the President of DEFO]
~ The existing bill has been simply for notifying, however, the one we newly developed is giving visual effects to citizens through the design, thus they can be aware of their energy consumption on their own. Similarly, another design-thinking product type is the Public Service Design Business, which functions to improve public services. An example is the Korea Design Knowledge and Industrial Forum, in short DEFO. DEFO has been designing crime prevention facilities with the city's well-being of the city and visual beauty being taken into consideration. They have increased the safety of our city through the installation of CCTVs, or security surveillance cameras, in bus shelters and increased street lights, together reducing the likelihood of crime. The public service design business is the result of the "Design Technology Development Business," which the Korea Evolution Institute of Industrial Technology, or KEIT, has been pushing ahead with. In the open briefing session on the twenty second of last August, the accomplishments of ten projects on industrial environment design, such as Sunchang Jangryu Valley, and on public design were announced.
[Interview - Dong-jin Yoo, Senior Engineer of Industrial Design Team of KEIT]
~ With this achievement, the local government is going to establish the ordinance or guidelines. And based on that, making a new image and creating a new city brand are expected. In the case of public service design, it is expected that the new industry will be born around the current state of our society. Design no longer pertains only to impractical luxury fashion anymore. It has now expanded into areas for securing industry competition, nurturing civic consciousness, and solving social issues we currently face today
