"Ashokan Farewell" was composed by Jay Ungar and Molly Mason in 1982. Ungar has described it as a Scottish lament. It was heard so frequently in the 1990 PBS series "The Civil War" that many viewers erroneously believed it was from the 1860s. "The Civil War" director Ken Burns heard it on an album by Ungar's long-dissolved band, Fiddle Fever, and loved it so much that he asked for the rights to use it in his documentary series.
