Last battle in the game Ryu has to fight solo and therefore gain experience and level up. And Arwan gives really a lot of exp, more than any other earlier solo boss, levelling Ryu to lv. 17 and giving him a great boost in the stats we've chosen.

I apprenticed Ryu under Giotto yet again. This boosts his HP and AP growth during those levels-up.

Arwan is very hard indeed. Just like Gaist, another hellish solo battle we'd gone through, at the start of the battle any normal physical attack will kill Ryu in one hit. This wouldn't be the case if we gained levels under master Fahl instead (who provides far better Defence boosts but doesn't raise max AP - which is a bit of a top priority for us here as we want to make full use of the Kaiser form in the final battle).

However, in the Gaist battle, the boss would keep dispelling our buffs, this one is unable to do that. That's why we should pray we don't get killed in the first 3 or so turns of the battle and cast Shield on Ryu 4-5 times, recovering HP whenever damaged and hoping we'll survive for the next turn.

Arwan's AI does include turns that we can make him waste. Inoculated to status protection (+50%) and equipped with the Light Bangle, Ryu is fully immune to Sleep, and thank goodness he is. With a Ring of Ice equipped, he will also absorb ice magic, which is Chill in the beginning of the battle and Blizzard in the boss's second phase (which lasts just one turn in this video lol).

After 4-5 Shields, we need to start attacking. Arwan has nasty defences though, so we want to buff out attack up with Holy Avenger (=Might). This weapon also happens to be the best way of damaging the boss, as he's weak to holy while resisting every other element.

As you can see, buffing and healing takes most of this battle, but there was a dozen or so failed attempts from dying on the first few turns, mainly on the first (50% chance of being killed with a normal attack each turn). Escaping from random enemies in this dungeon solo was no fun, either.
