About this Project: Rhode Island's history is beautifully quirky and endlessly surprising. This is something we can–and should be–incredibly proud of. Secretary of State Nellie M. Gorbea is working to ensure that the richness of our history is preserved and accessible to all Rhode Islanders by building a permanent home for our State Archives.
In 2018, the Department of State commissioned a Site Selection Study, which identified a location for the new facility on Capitol Hill. The proximity to the State House will make it easier for schools across the state to create experiential learning opportunities focused on civic education and Rhode Island history.
Facility highlights: 52,000 square feet including: • Permanent and rotating exhibition space. • Multi-use public meeting space. • A conservation and digital preservation lab. • A state-of-the-art secure storage space with 7,500 square reserved for cities and towns to store their historic treasures
