With a feel somewhere between that of a big city and small town, Aachen is cozy, yet offers everything you could want within its boundaries. Germany's westernmost city, Aachen has a population of approximately 250,000 and holds a long and colorful history, having been founded by the emperor Charlemagne.
It was the first designated UNESCO site in Germany and the second in the world. Due to its location on the Belgian and Dutch borders, Brussels can be reached by train within two hours and Amsterdam and Paris in under three. Cultural events occur year-round within this city that's "made for students!"
