This BBC interview with IRRI's Sigrid Heuer (23 August 2012) chronicles the culmination of a long and at times labyrinthine journey to discover PSTOL1 in rice, the hitherto elusive root-enhancing gene which enables phosphorus uptake in rice, hence increasing harvests.
The interview highlights the impacts of this significant scientific breakthrough -- including for poor farmers whose plots are on nutrient-poor problem soils. The GCP-funded project is captained by Sigrid Heuer as Principal Investigator, leading an international team of rice researchers.
