This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Can women living in energy poverty bring power to the people? Can a market-based distributed movement leapfrog the current energy paradigm that is causing global warming? Bringing power to the 20% of the world’s population living in darkness might just be the greatest business opportunity of our time, and women, with proper financing and training, hold the key to unlocking this market. This is the story of Empower Generation, a group of social entrepreneurs who are creating localized solutions to global problems by transforming energy access from a life-threatening struggle into a life-changing opportunity. It’s a story of empowerment, of entrepreneurship, and of the journey we are on to change the world.
Anya Cherneff is a social entrepreneur who is passionate about empowering women to control their own destinies and create a cleaner, healthier future. Anya originates from New York and is currently living in Amsterdam, running Empower Generation — a non-profit social enterprise that empowers women to own and operate clean energy distribution businesses in Nepal.
About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
