Reverend Billy and the Church of Life After Shopping brought a gospel choir to 16th and Mission today to protest a proposition that will make it illegal for people to sit or lie on public sidewalks during the day.

The choir sang the words to the First Amendment while Reverend Billy and other speakers condemned the sit/lie measure as unconstitutional.

The church, which is not affiliated with any particular religion, is a movement that opposes fundamentalism and consumerism using theater, humor and grassroots campaigning. Bill Talen, who is often referred to as "Reverend Billy," began preaching against consumerism alongside other street preachers in Times Square in 1994, and soon began staging worship services with a gospel choir. Reverend Billy and the Stop Shopping Choir have toured Africa, Europe and the Americas, according to the group's website.
