Tracking devices exist and they perform ok... but they do not make any sense for people who live with continuous memory challenges as they would inherently forget to carry these devices with them. Up until a few days ago, the only other solution would have been medical tracking device that require monthly fees for a target audience that often relies on meager insurance cheques to live.
Our solution targets these shortcomings by using a state of the art smart-watch just released by Samsung (Gear S) a few days ago. This smart-watch is the first one not to require a smart phone in proximity to function. It is a stand alone device that is capable of making and receiving phones calls. We used its GPS capability to send location data to our web server. A caregiver could set a safe perimeter using a user friendly map on our website and receive notification when the person wearing the watch leaves this perimeter.
The device being also a capable phone with 2G/3G capabilities, we setup an interface to send picture reminders for scheduled activities, as well as calling the person wearing the watch with the call being picked-up automatically after a gentle wrist vibration.
These improvements make this device the first one to not carry stigma, be affordable and stylish.
