The first instance of fuel being transferred in flight occurred as part of the first transcontinental non-stop helicopter flight in August 1956, when an Army H-21 made it across being refueled by a Beaver. In that instance, the fuel line was simply reeled out and grabbed by the crew chief standing in the open door.
