Many Palestinians who accuse Israel of being an apartheid state inherently contradict themselves by making such accusations in public forums inside the country and even in Israel's own Knesset to which many of these accusers are democratically elected, said Professor Gideon Shimoni.
He spoke critically of a minority of far-Left Israelis for making these bogus apartheid comparisons, but also spoke harshly towards a far Right "Kahanist" minority whose ideology was akin to that which prevailed in late-stage apartheid, what he described as a kind of "apartheid lite".

Shimoni is the former head of the Hebrew University's Institute of Contemporary Jewry and author of "Community and Conscience: The Jews in Apartheid South Africa". He spoke at "Combating Israel's Delegitimization: Debunking the Apartheid Myth," held on Sunday, July 18, 2010, at the Menachem Begin Heritage Center in Jerusalem. The event was sponsored by the Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs, the Begin Center and Telfed and was moderated by David Horovitz, Editor-in-Chief of the Jerusalem Post.
