Machine-readable identity cards could in the near future be an alternative travel document within the East African Community. According to the EAC Affairs Minister, Amason Kingi, this is one of the resolutions that have been made to facilitate free movement within the proposed East African Common Market set to begin in January next year. The Heads of State of the 5 EAC member countries will ratify this among other proposals contained in the Draft EAC Common Market Protocol next month.
