Like many dogs 4.5 year old Lexington barks when he hears the phone ring, doorbell, elevator, etc. Our goal is to teach him to go to his mat, lie down, and stay instead of barking. In the video we free shaped getting on his mat then cued the behaviors he already knew. To prepare him for the next step we recorded the offending noises and are pairing them with tasty snacks at gradually increasing volume. When Lexington develops a positive emotional response to the noises we will use them as a cue to go to his mat.
