One of my favorite community related talks this past year was +Ana Hevesi's Standing on the Shoulders of Giants: How We Can Borrow from Other Traditions and Level Up Our Game at CMX East in NYC. (http://cmxhub.com/ana-noemi-community...) In her talk, Ana emphasized that there is no need to reinvent the wheel when it comes to building communities and pointed out five ingredients of a growing community looking at Alcoholics Anonymous, Burning Man, Linux and StackExchange as examples. Expanding even further on this concept, it's possible to research behavior patterns to predict how a community will interact so that you can proactively setup your community workflows and policies accordingly. How, you ask?

Join us for this week’s #CMGRHangout panel on Friday, December 18th at 2pm EST/11am PST to discuss how to identify and apply behavioral patterns that help to influence how to build strong communities.

+Dom Garrett and +Sherrie Rohde will be hosting the hangout with +Jono Bacon, +Randy Farmer, +Jennifer Sable Lopez and +Scott Moore as panelists. +Christin Kardos and +Carrie Keenan will be moderating the Twitter chat using #CMGRHangout .

Discussion Questions

1. What are good resources for someone who wants to start looking at behavior research?
2. How can you identify behavior patterns within your existing community?
3. Research shows people don't like uncertainty in their relationships. How can we build certainty into our communities?
4. Research shows bad behavior propagates when a dominant social group accepts it. How does this impact community policies?
5. How can we take research on habit formation and apply it to our community workflows?
6. What are other key behavior patterns we can study for building strong communities?
