The VA Center for Innovation (VACI) recently piloted an innovation that developed a new version of a web-based telehealth service enabling Veteran patients to see their doctors virtually and securely, without having to travel long distances. This service integrates with the VA electronic medical record (VistA), and was field-tested with Veteran patients and VA providers in Omaha and Minneapolis. The project — done in partnership with Boston-based American Well — explored the feasibility of pushing beyond brick-and-mortar hospital care to create on-demand, virtual patient-doctor interaction as a cost-effective alternative that allows VA to increase access to quality care for more Veterans.
