Steve Martland (b.1959) is a very interesting case of a composer. He studied in his native Liverpool and in Hague. After 1985 he outspokenly denounced Thatcherian political views. He wants his music to be a ´´weapon against despair``. His music has assimilated rock and jazz elements, used to reject the use of conventionnal orchestra and brims over with energy. A cherished composer by choreographers.
In 1989 he composed a powerful piece called ´Principia`. A part of this work is ´Patrol` (we actually listen to it) which later was developped into a string quartet (if my information is accurate).
Along with this excellent music I present you some photos I took in Copenhagen, Dennmark. A vibrant city with elaborate design and architecture of a glorious past. But the Dannish people invest their city in a casual and informal way. They decisevely live in the present of a glorious past.
