Recycling contamination and confusion on what to recycle are threatening the long-term viability of sustainable recycling programs. Contamination occurs when trash, food, and other non-recyclable items are placed in recycling containers. Some items that are recyclable (peanut butter jars, ranch dressing bottles, ketchup bottles, etc.) end up not being recycled because they are not properly prepared. Recycling properly reduces the amount of good recyclables that end up in landfills.
