Hi, my name is Marty and I am 19 years old. I have been an active Florida Youth SHINE member of the Seminole Chapter for the past two years. I have advocated statewide, sharing my story about multiple placements and the issues I experienced growing up in the system. I came into care at the age of 3 and despite many attempts for an adoption and a forever family I aged out of care at 18 without a family of my own. I just started college after graduating HS and I am studying technology. While I was in care, I was in over 30 placements and went to more schools then I could remember. Due to this experience I grew up without learning what it meant to be loved and trust others. I became angry and would act out. Because I always wanted to be adopted when I was younger, I would get sad and upset when the kids at school or around the neighborhood would go home and be with their parents and have good times with them. I always yearned for a mother and father bond but never got that permanency. Despite all of this, I work hard to advocate so that other kids don’t have the experience I had and so that I can overcome my experience to become a successful adult. I enjoyed making this digital story and thought it was a great experience. It brought out things that I haven’t thought about in such a long time…things that I haven’t shared with many people. I created it with hopes that other children don’t have to go through what I did. I want others to know to go out and adopt - there are kids that need loving parents to treat them like family. There are so many kids that need and want permanency. I hope you enjoy watching my story.
