The Rio Negro became contaminated with heavy metals as an unexpected consequence of climate change. Mountain villages rely on this river for their drinking water, their livestock and for irrigation canals that supported local agriculture. The new water purification system combines the latest science with traditional knowledge and is based on natural processes. Thanks to community efforts and bioremediation, local water is safe again.
